  • Claire Louise

If you’ve ever thought to yourself “I want to try modelling”, it can be the first steps on an exciting journey. Do you want to give modelling a go? Register with UK Models to take part in your very own photoshoot!

Take Every Step as It Comes

You can’t wake up one morning, decide “I want to be a model”, and the next minute, be strutting your stuff alongside Kendall Jenner on the runway at New York, Milan or London Fashion Week. It just doesn’t work that way!

To get started, you really need to think about why you want to do it. Do you like attention? The spotlight? Do you want your time to shine? Perfect!

The first steps are to get practising. Take some test shots with a friend. If they have a professional camera, even better! Have a go at posing, and walking like a runway model at a fashion show. Supermodels are what draws many to the industry yet there are a variety of ways you can be a successful model.

Know the Different Types of Modelling

Understanding what niche you would like to enter is vital to your success as each has a different look. You’ve got the high fashion catwalk, commercial models, catalogue work, plus-size models, the fitness department, the lingerie world and glamour modelling. Each asks a unique set of requirements. Therefore, it is up to you to work out if you have the right look.

However, for each type of modelling there are reputable agencies that are seeking new models to sign to their books. Either fill out their application form attached with a headshot and body shot or arrange to go to one of their walk in sessions. Once accepted the modelling agent will arrange casting calls for you to attend to secure modelling jobs. The first time will be nerve wracking but you will be going to a lot throughout your modelling career gaining the experience needed to feel more confident each time.

The Professional Model Portfolio

The next steps involve getting a portfolio together. This is your photo-CV, if you will. Agencies will want to see how you photograph at a photoshoot! UK Models can help you get a really professional one together. By attending their studio shoot you will be experience life as a model with makeup artists and hair stylists available on the day.

You can also work ‘TFP’ – Time For Print – in order to get some great shots to start off with! However, make sure that you don’t fall prey to any scams.

Managing Expectations

The modelling industry is tough, full of competition and challenges. However, if you’re ready for it, you can do it! Here are a few things to note:

  • Aspiring models can’t expect to go full time or even to be paid right away.
  • If you want great results, you have to put in the effort.
  • You need to take care of yourself. This means eating properly, working out, keeping hydrated.
  • You need to get signed to a modelling agency.
  • It is essential to have a strong social media presence in the fashion industry.
  • You need the right attitude. Absolutely no divas! Professionalism is key.
  • Networking is important, as is being in the right place at the right time.
  • Rejection can happen, no matter what level you’re at.
