Why Don’t Fashion Models Smile?

Why don’t fashion models smile? Is there a reason why supermodels on the runway remain straight faced and sinister whilst wearing beautiful creations? Are they banned from smiling? From appearing happy? Let’s take a look into the possible reasons why those who step foot on the runway leave their personality backstage. It proves that there are many answers to the regularly pondered question – to smile or not to smile???

Distraction – so the main aim of a fashion show is to showcase the latest designs from brands and designers. It is important to not distract from the designs too much as a smiling model naturally radiates attention whereas a brooding pout can go ignored. The result??? A focus on the clothing and higher sales for the label. A very rational reason for the lack of smiling in the high fashion world!!

Difficulty – Trying to smile whilst remembering your routine on the catwalk can be a difficult task to adopt. Having the pressure of walking correctly in front of a large audience remembering your place can be stressful – it can be very difficult to smile whilst under pressure!! Don’t you agree?

Status – A stern facial expression provides a higher status than those who smile. The sea of spectators will feel of a lower class hoping to one day be on par with the goddesses that walk the runway. If they purchase her gorgeous dress, emulate her make-up and hairstyle she too will have the high status that the supermodel projects from her lack of smiling. An illusion created by the lack of smiles found on the runway.

History – A supposed trend that has lasted four decades and sparked the non smile!!! During the late 70s and early 80s models began to adopt the serious facial expression to echo the drug taking, sexualised, hard living era. The exhaustion both physically and mentally throughout this period caused the models to take on a miserable, gaunt look that has not been forgotten.

Function – Another historical reference that dates back even further is when couture houses used to present their latest collection at the fashion house in a small room with the models practically walking through the audience. It was a lot easier for the adoring fans to touch and tug at the garments causing damage. A solution was for the models to appear stern and aloof to discourage contact.

Vision – It has been known for models to smile on rare occasions on the catwalk and in fashion campaigns. However, the decision is mainly down to the feel of the collection and vision of the designer. If unsmiling, stern faces suit the visual aesthetic, tone, mood and attitude of the showcase then this is the direction the label will go in and the models will adopt accordingly.

Edge – A serious look is considered to be a lot more edgy and cool as smiling can be cringeworthy if the model over exaggerates. A smile can be perceived as fake as it is difficult to plant a natural, realistic smile on your face for the duration of the performance. It is important for the fashion industry to appear stylish, cool and edgy, which is why the majority of models adopt stern faces.
