Signing To An International Model Agency

  • Claire Louise

Being signed by an international model agency is the dream, right? There are many different perks when it comes to being a model, but international travel can be one of the biggest and best.

When you sign to an international agency, it’s likely that you’ll be at the top of your game. Big agencies like Premier Model Management, IMG, Ford Models, Marilyn Agency, Elite Model Management and Wilhelmina are only going to invest in top models, and so you should be honoured that you have been selected.

With an international model agency, no job is too big for their fashion models to undertake, and so you will realistically be expected to venture all over the world. Of course, this is a dream for many people, but there are a few considerations that a lot of people will have to be really honest with themselves about.

Time Away From Family

You might spend lots of time away from family, friends or your partner. The fashion industry works all over the world with jobs in Barcelona or New York City for example. As you’re working and it’s technically part of your job, you can’t really bring anyone along for the ride, unless you’re under 18 and they’re your guardian.

Anyone who does want to visit you will have to do so at their own expense. Plus, you might not have time in your busy schedule to meet with them. The job comes first! Calls home can be pricey, so you’ll need to check with your phone provider about this. However, this is getting much better now. The world is more connected than ever with social media, WhatsApp and Skype. You can keep in touch with loved ones much easier. Make sure you do to avoid feeling isolated and lonely.

Have No Fear of Flying

You will have to make sure that you are comfortable with long flights and long hours. Whilst you will be looked after by modelling agencies, you will be expected to work hard. They can’t put that much money into flying you to another place if you’re going to let them down when you get there. If you’re an anxious person, you might want to seek help with a fear of flying before you go, as you don’t want to risk being unprofessional.

Different Climates

Different countries have different climates. Aspiring models living in the United Kingdom will not be used to the temperatures of the likes of Miami, Los Angeles or Milan. You might be expected to spend a lot of time in the baking sun for a shoot or alternatively you might actually stand wearing next to nothing in the freezing cold. This is part of your job, and you’ll have to comply with what they want.

Of course, the opportunity to be represented by an international model agency can also lead to fame and fortune! You’ll also get to see many places in the world that you might never have dreamed possible. Providing you match a certain aesthetic and you’re a reliable model.

Who’s Paying?

It is important for new models to ask their modelling agency who is paying their expenses before accepting the role. Don’t ask the casting directors when you attend the appointment yet if you do secure the role make sure you check who will be paying for your flights, accommodation and food etc.

It’s easy to get swept up in the moment of travelling to an exciting destination yet do ask the important questions. Too many times, the expenses are deducted from the models wage leaving them with very little at the end of it. Supermodels with a more established name such as Naomi Campbell, Karlie Kloss and Kate Moss will be paid for with their standing in the industry yet new faces may be taken advantage of. With make-up artists and hair stylists to accommodate too, some companies try to be sneaky when it comes to female and male models. Be aware.
