A successful modelling career is the result of years of hard work, dedication and commitment. Many young hopefuls are drawn to the glamorous side of the modelling world yet the realisation is much different.

Sign to a Reputable Agency

The most obvious route is signing to a model agency that can guide you in the correct direction. They will take a percent of your earnings for access to their network and securing your casting calls. It is important that you find a reputable company that only deducts what you owe and works legitimately.

Again, research is key to understanding how a modelling agency works. To apply most accept either online applications or hold walk in sessions. Make sure you are prepared by filling in the correct details and looking up the appointment times in advance.

Create a Portfolio

It is essential to create a portfolio either online or in print to showcase your potential to a future client. This may be an agent, casting director, photographer or designer looking to hire you. Ensure that the image quality is to a high standard and represents you in a positive light.

Throughout your career you will continually edit the portfolio to maintain a relevant evidence of work. Choosing a few shots to include on a Z-Card is also a great way of showcasing your talent at a networking event. Portfolios are the perfect way to present your experience to date.

Select a Niche

There are many types of modelling within the industry that you need to consider. High fashion, commercial, catalogue, fitness, plus-size and petite all demand different physiques, poses and lifestyles. You have to tailor your models career to a particular niche to realistically find success.

High fashion attracts a tall, slim catwalk model whereas the fitness industry demands a toned, muscular physique that needs to be maintained.

How Much do Models Get Paid

It can be very financially rewarding. If you’re working at a high level, you can expect to earn a lot more than an average salary. However, not everyone can reach this pay bracket.

It can be very hard to make it to the top. You’ll usually start out making little money, if any at all. Even when you are earning as a fashion model, the money might be very sporadic. For example, one week you might earn £500. You might then not earn any money for 6 weeks, before making a lump sum of £3000. It’s very hit and miss at times!

You might have to invest a lot to begin with. Whilst you won’t ever pay to join a modelling agency, your portfolio can cost money to build. You may be expected to pay for travel and accommodation, which can add up. Check before you agree to a job about what is actually paid for.

There can be freebies galore! If you’re representing a successful brand or label, one of the benefits can be getting to keep the clothes or getting free travel, food and drink. Sometimes fashion designers can pay you in clothes rather than cash. Make sure that you agree to this before signing the contract.

You Will Attend Many Castings

Your daily routine will involve attending casting after casting hoping to be hired for a fashion modelling job. Models spend a lot of time waiting to be seen before dashing across town to another audition.

Fitting castings and meetings around another job might be difficult when you first start. However, it is essential that you attend as many as possible to increase you chances of working regularly.

A Models Work Schedule

It is no 9-5 routine with very early mornings and late evenings. Photoshoots can be scheduled for different times of the day depending on the location or studio booking. Fashion shows also can vary depending on the designer. Therefore, models careers demand flexibility and a hard working ethos.

Ensure that you are organised and prepared for a modelling career that involves shooting into the night. Prompt, reliable female and male models who enjoy irregular hours and creating the winning shot are desired.

Be Prepared to Travel

You’ll get to see the world! If you’re a supermodel, you’ll see loads of different countries and visit places you might otherwise have never imagined to be possible. Many top models live out of a suitcase rarely being at home. Flying to cities like New York is a possibility.

Commercial models also are required to travel in the United Kingdom or around a city. Make sure you are aware of what is being paid for and arrive on time!

Once you’re successful in your modelling career, it can be hard never being at home around loved ones. You might feel like you’re missing out on experiences and start to feel unsettled. Make sure you confide in someone if you begin to feel this way.

Stay Safe

You can be extremely vulnerable to scams or exploitation. Always tell someone where you are going if you’ve been booked for a job, and use common sense when it comes to money or shady characters.

Never accept work from social media or be lured into a Skype chat. Get to know the company before agreeing to be photographed. It’s just not worth risking your safety and reputation by a false judgement. Young, new models are heavily targeted. Be careful.
