2013’s Fresh Faces

  • Freya Hill

Do you remember that terrifying ‘first day at school’? Bursting with anticipation, drenched in fear but propelled by excitement and want, there were only teachers, exams and puberty standing in the way of our fledging selves. Keep those emotions in place and swap teachers for casting agents, exams for catwalks and puberty for adulthood and you’ve carved the perfect picture of a new model’s life.

But who are the fresh faces of 2013 that we should be keeping a hawk-eye out for?

According to casting director Andrew Weir, there were ‘maybe a handful of rookies with the potential to actually break through’, and here at UK Models we know the lucky few. Get ready to meet the great girl gang.

Nastya Kusakina: Radiantly beautiful with her flawless skin, Kusakina has gained great interest from make-up brands M.A.C, Urban Decay and Sephora. But her talents don’t halt there; Fall 2012 proved a significant season. She not only walked for Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Maison Martin Margiela but iconically Kusakina opened Raf Simon’s finale show for Jil Sander and then walked at his debut Dior show.

Tamara Weijenberg: TV fanatics, you may recognise this nineteen old as the winner of Holland’s 2011 Next Top Model. Seizing her prize, Weijenberg worked in collaboration with MaxFactor before posing for Alexander Wang and Acne’s Resort lookbooks. Who would of thought the trained police officer would end up on the inner pages of Elle, Chaos and Document magazine? Certainly not us, until we saw her face.

Magdalena Jasek: Her red hair and fiery freckles; it’s the first thing you’ll notice about this girl. Although she fell from the fashion radar after a successful appearance at Jean Paul Gaultier and Maison Martin Margiela Fall 2010, Jasek is set for big things in the New Year.

Amanda Hendrick: A model boasting a British upbringing, Hendrick has experienced walking for Harvey Nichols (Spring 09) to Balenciaga, Jean Paul Gaultier (Spring 12), DKNY, Helmut Lang, Vivienne Westwood and Oscar de la Renta (Fall 2012). If that wasn’t impressive enough, Oscar de la Renta came back for more, as the Scottish beauty found herself modelling their Resort 2013 looks.

Mackenzie Drazan: Scoring gold with a Louis Vuitton ad campaign contract and walking for Elie Saab and Valentino couture, this pointy-featured girl has an unforgettable look.

Anmari Botha: Despite being scouted at the tender age of 12, Botha’s modelling career didn’t kick off until 2012. The wait however was clearly worth it. In 2012 she took to the haute couture Giambattista Valli and Givenchy shows, in Spring 2013 she modelled the 3.1 Philip Lim Resort lookbook and to complete an impressive year, she closed the Maison Martin Margiela show.

Milana Kruz; Alluring grey eyes on a Russian body, this nineteen year old had four shows in SS 12 (including Lanvin) then upped her ranks for Fall 2012 by walking in seven, including 3.1 Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, Missoni and Thakoon. You may have spotted her in editorials for Russian Vogue and Interview magazine too.

Zenia Sevastyanova: Better known as Zen, here at UK Models we’ve spotted this modelling talent inside the pages of Oyster, V and Elle Magazine, not to mention her front cover feature on Dazed and Confused’s July edition. Clearly not satisfied with dominating the editorial scene, Zen’s appeared again on the Preen, Prada, Hermes, Chanel and Betsey Johnson catwalks.

Florence Huntington-Whiteley: Recognise that name? Of course you do. The younger sibling of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has just secured her first advertising campaign contract, despite embarking on a degree at Leeds university. Not just a pretty face, ay?

Rosie Tapner: As Elle so perfectly put it, this is the “pouty Brit with killer cheekbones”. Balenciaga quite clearly agree, having snapped her up at the tender age of fifteen for their advertising campaign. We expect her to make her mark officially in 2013.

Juliana Schurig: As for other young beauties, meet Schurig who made her debut for Miu Miu’s Resort collection in 2010. Over the next few seasons she disappeared from the modelling scene, later confirmed to have given her time to her studies, but in 2012 she reappeared for Jenkao Fall 2012. Her shots have appeared in Teen Vogue, Elle Italia and Vogue Germany.

Stef Van Der Laan: Where haven’t we seen this Dutch beauty? She rose to our attention in 2006 for her inclusion in Dutch Elle, but in more recent times her presence has been on the Givenchy Fall 2012 runway, then again for couture Chanel and Atelier Versace. For V Magazine’s July edition Laan made a stunning appearance on the cover, she also featured in Carine Roitfeld’s ‘All Black Cannes Affair’.

Grace Mahary: Another girl who walked the Givenchy Fall catwalk is Mahary, a model who had previously dedicated her life to basketball. After appearing in a Trey Songz music video she went on to model for couture Givenchy (whilst suggesting her answer to such an athletic figure is down to sushi and yoga).

Madison Headrick: A modest CV so far, 18 year old Headrick from South Carolina impressed onlookers at her debut catwalk for Prada. She has since gone on to feature in their campaign.

Margita Zuchova: If you’re an Alexander McQueen admirer, you may have noticed this fresh face in the Resort lookbook. Or perhaps you’ve noted her on the Couture Dior runway?

Whilst Style.com’s Brittany Murphy suggested that the team ‘wouldn’t be surprised to see (Stef Van Der Laan and Grace Mahary) do upwards of 50 shows this time around” and Caroline F (signed to Elite) was noted as being ‘perfect for Celine’, UK Models agree that 2013 going’s to be an extraordinary year for these girls.

P.S. Take it from us, the name Lena Lomako’s worth noting too.
